The Neutron Star Series is based on a series of scientific graphs which illustrate a variety of astrophysics papers. Bettina Forget was inspired by the 40 Years of Pulsars conference which took place at McGill University in 2007. One of the speakers was Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who discovered the very first pulsar in 1967. The scientific presentations of the conference were rich in visual material, specifically graphs.
Bettina Forget understands graphs as visual abstractions, a device used by both artists and scientists. Following the Pulsar conference, she selected some of the more visually stimulating graphs and "translated" them into paintings.
